Summer of Indie Meets Beth Balmanno

Readers looking for books aimed at a younger audience will want to check out author Beth Balmanno, who writes young adult and middle grade-level novels. Summer of Indie spoke with Beth about two of her books. The first is Set In Stone, a young adult adventure/romance about a young girl that becomes involved in Celtic lore after finding a mysterious stone. The second is Nine Lives, a young boy who is repeatedly saved from death by a mysterious cat.

Set in Stone

SET IN STONEFifteen year-old Valerie is used to losing things–she lost her dad to his job ages ago and her best friend moved with no warning...and hasn't been heard from since.

During a weekend camping trip with her emotionally distant parents, she stumbles upon a hidden, mysterious stone and she finds herself desperate to keep it, to possess it.

Two strange and beautiful boys have other plans, however.

They follow her home–Leo, warm and seductive, who covets the stone and will stop at nothing to get it; and Noel, dark-haired and wise, who pledges to protect her and keep her safe.

As she delves deeper into the magic of the stone and the Celtic lore that surrounds it, Valerie realizes that she's losing. Again. But this loss might involve more than a magical stone – this time, she just might lose her heart.

Nine Lives

Nick Ziegler has a problem. He keeps almost dying. What's worse, a mysteriousblack cat named Mike keeps saving him. Not cool when you're eleven years old and just trying to enjoy the start of summer. But no matter where he goes—the lake, a tree in a neighbor's yard or just walking down the road—he finds himself staring death squarely in the face. Each time, though, the cat appears and somehow manages to keep him alive. Nick can't figure out who the cat belongs to or why he keeps showing up and as more people begin to take notice of his newfound protector—particularly his worried mother and his obnoxious older brother—he is determined to find out exactly what is going on. As his friends begin to back away and make fun of him, Nick finds an ally in Emma, his former nemesis. When his mother delivers some devastating news, he and Emma begin to put the pieces together and they come to the realization that Mike may have a far bigger place in Nick's life than either of them could have ever imagined.

Beth Balmanno is the author of the YA novel Set In Stone and Nine Lives, a middle grade book. She has a BA in English from San Diego State University but freely admits she has learned more in the years after college than she ever did in school. When she isn't writing, traveling or serving as her children's chauffeur, she spends her time molding the youth of America -- as an alternative-learning educator and as a leader in scouting and 4-H. World, look out.

In addition to telling us about her life, author Beth Balmanno told Summer of Indie a few interesting facts about herself that she wanted to share with readers:

  • "I have been writing stories for as long as I can remember.
  • I crashed my car -- through my parents' bedroom -- when I was 17. And my dad was with me in the car.
  • I believe in fairies.
  • I was a military brat and moved around more times than I can remember.
  • I saw Jaws when I was six...while living in Hawaii...and it scarred me for life (thanks, Mom!).
  • I love turtles. Like, I want a bathtub full of them. I have been known to pull over -- anywhere, any time -- if I see a turtle in the road to help it safely cross. Just call me the Turtle Whisperer.
  • I have three kids who somehow manage to simultaneously inspire everything I do and drive me nuts.
  • Who would I rather hang out with on a Friday night: teens or adults? TEENS (which is probably why I write YA).
  • I majored in English Lit and read Frankenstein seven times throughout college. Guess my professors really liked it...(I do, too!).
  • I own the largest cat in the world. And the largest bunny. Seriously. They are MASSIVE.
  • I can't think of any job I'd rather have than being a writer."

Summer of Indie Speaks With Jessica Dragon Cheramie

Today Summer of Indie spoke with author Jessica Dragon Cheramie about her young-adult, urban fantasy book Secrets of the Truth, which is the first book in the Meridienne Drake series

Secrets of the Truth

Cover for 'Meridienne Drake: Secrets of the Truth'Meridienne Drake thought she had it all figured out, but her parents had other plans for her. Thrown on a plane to Portland, Oregon to spend the summer with family she never knew existed, Meridienne realizes she didn’t know the people who raised her at all. More than that, strange things are beginning to happen to her.

Meridienne wants to be anything other than strange especially when her summer begins to take a turn for the better because of Will, the mysterious new boy. But the strange and unusual just keep occurring until she discovers an even bigger secret. Magic. Her fourteenth birthday reveals secrets and realities that Meridienne had only dreamed about, literally. Will Meridienne accept this secret life and face what comes with that? Or, is all this heat too much for her?

"Secrets of the truth. It felt like my entire life was suddenly full of secrets."

After hearing about Secrets of the Truth, we asked author Jessica Dragon Cheramie to tell us more about herself:

"I’m the girl you see singing at the top of her lungs in her car. I'm usually drinking coffee or wine depending on the time of day, holding my knitting needles while watching Saturday flag football, dancing in the middle of the dance floor or room, if no actual dance floor, and reading in my hammock on beautiful, sunny days. I have this crazy, mad urge to get the mini movies playing in my head on paper in the middle of the night and live on a Vampire’s schedule when writing a book. I live in a world with my Prince Charming and a furry, ferocious dragon, also known as Brie(my 8lb Shih Tzu)."

And of course, we had to ask what it was like having the last name Dragon growing up.
Jessica responded: "In grammar school, I was nicknamed, Fire-Breathing Dragon because I caught a boy older than me picking on my little brother and punched him in the jaw. In high school, I was nicknamed, Puff, because teachers would stumble on my last name on roll call (How do you stumble on that?), and I would always say Dragon, like Puff the Magic Dragon."

Summer of Indie Discusses the "BoogeyMann" With Bennie L. Newsome

Today Summer of Indie talked with Bennie L. Newsome, a writer born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama where they currently reside. When asked for a brief personal description, Newsome replied, " I consider myself to be a unique person full of humor, two qualities that I strive to instill into all of my work." Bennie L. Newsome has stories published in several anthologies (one of which has been nominated for a Pushcart Award), and several other short stories and two novels scheduled to debut in the 2012 calendar year. Summer of Indie talked with Bennie L. Newsome in more detail about their new young adult/horror book, BoogeyMann.

BoogeyMann:

What do you do when time-outs prove to be ineffective, and whippings are practically illegal? How can you attempt to reason with children, who are by nature, unreasonable creatures? When all else fails, take a chapter from Bryan Mann’s playbook: spare the rod, scare the child.

It’s report card time, and sixteen-year-old, Benjamin Mann, happens to be more stressed than usual. The party of the year is taking place and the girl of his dreams will be in attendance, but there is something preventing him from having the time of his life--poor grades. In order to have a night to remember and avoid the cruel and unusual punishment his father (Bryan Mann) is known for, Benjamin must break one of his father’s commandments. He must tell a lie.

As if being lied to does not get Mr. Mann’s blood boiling enough, his eleven-year old daughter, Kayla, comes to him and complains about being bullied at school.

Instead of enjoying a night of festivities, Benjamin Mann and his best friend, Darnell Wallace, find themselves stranded in the woods while being pursued by horrors that they thought only existed in legends. Not far from where they tremble in fear, Kayla’s bully--Anthony Jones--attempts to escape the clutches of that very same evil. Is it just a coincidence, or has Mr. Mann’s simple “hiding under the bed” tactics elevated to an all new frightening level.

Summer of Indie Talks With Kevin McGill

Today Summer of Indie talked with Kevin McGill, our next featured author. Kevin McGill is the author of Nikolas and Company: The Merman and The Moon Forgotten #1,a young adult fantasy book.

Nikolas and Company: The Merman and The Moon Forgotten #1
Nikolas and Company: the Merman and the Moon Forgotten #1Senior stagecoach driver Yeri Willrow thought he was performing a simple drive and drop for his mysterious passengers, until they are attacked by foul-breath red-eyed creatures. He soon learns that his passengers are a family of automaton-legged merfolk, and he is their only hope. Yeri suddenly finds himself tasked with saving the merfolk or they will fall to the peril of the creature most foul.
Sometime in the near future...
Nick lives in a time when one can zip from country to country in mach-speed hovercars, extend their life indefinitely through cerebral downloads, and have every whim taken care of by their ever faithful nannydrone.
Nick hates it.
Aside from the refugee camps, overpopulation, and unchecked consumerism filling every city across the globe, Nick just doesn’t belong. That is when he hears the voice of a woman:
The Rones lie about their true intent. They enter the city of Huron at the peril of us all.
Shortly after, his slightly crazed grandfather reveals to him:
“All you've ever heard about the Moon is a lie, my dear Nikolas. He was not always a mere satellite, a ghost wandering the stars. In an age before our own, Moon was our twin, and in him bore the whole of magical life. The cradle of this magical civilization was a fantastic metropolis filled with fire-breathing winged lions, volcano-born nymphs, automaton-legged mermaids, and so much magic you could smell it. We called this metropolis Huron, and you, Nikolas, are her steward.”
Author Kevin McGill also included this video book trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=sSqNcoGB8E8

We asked Kevin McGill to give us some brief biographical information, as well as tell us where readers can find him online:
Image of Kevin McGill"Kevin knew he liked this writing gig when 3rd grade classmates paid him two bucks for every story he wrote. Unbeknownst to him, the students turned in the stories as homework assignments (If Kevin had known, he would have charged double). His literary operations were exposed because the monkey scribble was undeniably Kevin's handwriting. Unless, it actually was monkey scribble. Kevin was cast into detention. But, being the industrious boy that he was, detention served as a place only to imagine more fantastic worlds. Today, his wife graciously listens as he reads wild stories about foul monsters, fire-breathing winged lions, and the mysterious voice of Huron city, which speaks only to its 14yr old steward, Nikolas Lyons."

Summer of Indie Discusses Crystal Shade With Istvan Szabo

Our Summer of Indie author for today is Istvan Szabo, author of Crystal Shade: Angeni, Volume 1. Crystal Shade is a young adult, epic fantasy book, and it is the first book in a trilogy.

We asked author Istvan Szabo to give us a closer look at their book:

Crystal Shade: Angeni, Volume 1

“Thousands of stars could tell thousands of stories.
Cover for 'Crystal Shade: Angeni, Volume 1'Seven year old Grace always dreamt of becoming a guardian angel; like those who guarded and guided her people and prepared to bravely fight in a dreaded mythical event, the Crystal Shade – which never came. It's not like Grace ever wanted to see Demons. Or wants to know what evil and
darkness is – things that no one ever faced on her world and as the legends says, the Crystal Shade carries within –, nor does she want to die to be reborn as a guardian. But she thinks the mysterious life of angels is so noble, a fable that it sounds exciting – until it actually happens.
Crystal Shade: Angeni, Volume 1 explores the early life of a young daydreaming soul who is destined to reveal the forgotten past of her home world and to seek the answer for the eternal question; what the legendary Crystal Shade really is.

Available at:

After getting this glimpse into the first volume of the Crystal Shade trilogy, we asked author Istvan Szabo more about being an author, and their inspirations for writing Crystal Shade: Angeni, Volume 1.

Q: Can you tell us more about yourself?

A: Based out of Budapest, Hungary, I began my writing and art
career at a young age. My strengths include Science Fiction, Fantasy,
Thrillers, as well as Spiritual, Romantic, and Political works. At the
beginning of my career, two companies asked me to create and
write the stories of two of their video games. Since 2007, working
parallel on several different projects, I mostly developed and
worked on the Crystal Shade franchise and wrote Crystal Shade: Angeni.
As an artist for hire, I have created illustrations, character art,
short CGI animations and marketing materials for various projects as
well as for my own works, Crystal Shade: Angeni, 7 Post Meridiem,
Nightfall and other unannounced projects. In 2007, I produced my
first short movie "15 Minutes of Fame", in which I was the
screenwriter, director and storyboard artist. "15 Minutes of Fame" won
3rd Place at the UPC-AXN Film Festival 2007.

Q: Can you tell us how you got started writing?

It's a family tradition. For years I was a screenwriter / director and now I'm an author. But I always wanted to be a writer and I always wanted to present a new, breathing and living world, be it fantasy or science fiction.

Q: Can you give us some background on your book?

A: One of the key phases in Crystal Shade; Thousands of stars could tell thousands of stories. While angels and demons play the key role in Crystal Shade, the trilogy tries to present these mythical and mysterious creatures in a completely different way than the well known ones as well as trying to bring them closer. To present them as less rigid and / or almighty to the readers. Because angels and demons, spirits, souls and other religious creatures are sometimes alienating readers, in Crystal Shade we present these creatures independently so that everyone may read and enjoy regardless of origin and belief.

Life is not just about mindless actions and instant adventures… as many believe when a story must be told. Sometimes a world, its culture and its past must be known, its story and its secrets must be learned and revealed to understand, especially where everything has a beginning and an end and foremost; where nothing and no one is what they appear to be. – If my heroine should summarize the story, her life this is how she would do it as this ideal led me during the development and writing of Crystal Shade.

The worst critique that a novel can get; two dimensional, boring, full of clichés and predictable. When we started to develop the storyline of Crystal Shade: Angeni I considered all these elements and tried to avoid them from the very first page, be it speaking about the characters, world development and also the most important element of all, the story. The story of Crystal Shade intends to be a rich one, which is similar to life itself, were you don’t know what the future or even the next page might bring. And sometimes you might even not know for a time where the story truly wants to flow. But in the very end when you look back you’ll see every action had a cause and effect, every single detail had a reason, a rightful place and was there where it needed to be.

Writing stories is about imagination and not about rules; at least as I used to say. And every story must have a soul otherwise it will be an empty shell. Because of this single reason in Crystal Shade I avoided and ignored most of the present binding industry rules, standards and protocols. The storyline doesn’t start so close or right in the action because it’s a must, and we also didn’t fill the pages with mindless action just to grab your attention. Crystal Shade starts where it must and ends where it should be. The story also won’t spoil you with explanations page by page. Hopefully it will raise more and more questions that might entice you into finding the answers by yourself. I’d like to lead you into this beautiful world and its story, instead of simply throwing you into the middle of it. With this I’d like to give you an opportunity to live, feel and experience, to understand all of its details, while along with our heroine you’ll discover the unknown. The goal is not to amaze the industry or any of our fellow professionals. The goal is to give a unique story that speaks from the soul to the true audience, you, the readers. Hopefully the story that we will tell you is going to win your satisfaction.

Summer of Indie Meets With Author Bill Miller

Today, Summer of Indie met with Bill Miller, author of Heroes and Hounds. Author Bill Miller briefly described the book as, "an adventure story about a young girl, her pony and a lost foxhound. Along the way there are many adventures, scary moments and life lessons in what it means to be a hero."

We talked with Bill Miller about his young adult novel,Heroes and Hounds, and asked for a more in-depth look.

Heroes and Hounds:

Picture
While Carly's parents are finishing out their military tours, she stays with her grandfather on his farm. She loves watching the Riverdale Hunt Club in the fall and yearns to join them. Her own pony, Monroe, used to run with them before he became hers, but she is only eleven. So she dreams of riding Monroe chasing the fox.

Hampton is a new addition to the kennels and because one of the other hounds is injured, he gets to join in. He's really excited but he's never ran so much and he is tired. When he gets a drink at the stream, the Hunt leaves him and Hampton is lost. He is hungry, tired and just wants to go home. When he smells something yummy on the air, he follows his nose and winds up at the home of Strange Willie.

Willie is a vet who lives very basically and doesn't ask for much. Most of the children in the area are scared to death of him. At first Willie tries to shoot Hampton, but thankfully a fox leaps in the way and saves Hampton. Later, Hampton saves the fox from one of Willie's booby traps. An unorthodox friendship, but it works. When Willie's house catches afire, even though he had tried to shoot Hampton, he enters the abode and wakens Willie, saving his life.

Carly is determined to find the lost hound, but when she is out looking, a rabid skunk approaches her. Thankfully, Willie saves her life. He isn't as scary as everyone says and she sees he has Hampton. But the Master of the Hunt is looking for Hampton and Carly isn't sure what the right thing to do would be. But when one of her friends disappears, Carly knows she has to speak up.

"Heroes and Hounds is a middle-grade novel with appealing characters and several great messages. Bringing the fox and the hound to life in a new twist from the Disney version is delightful and thoroughly entertaining. Miller does a great job of keeping the reader involved in the story with many adventures. If you like animals and a clean read, pick this one up! You're sure to enjoy it!"

When asked for a brief description of himself, Miller said that he, "has been riding to the hounds for the over 40 years. For nearly 20 years he has been an honorary whipper-in for the Norfolk Hunt Club. He is also actively involved in Team Penning during the summer months. He lives on a small farm in Sherborn, Massachusetts with his wife and three horses. When not working with horses, he is an independent film director and cinematographer."
For those interested in his independent film and cinematography, his website is: http://www.billmillerfilm.com.

We asked author Bill Miller more about Heroes and Hounds, inspirations for writing, and what it's like to be an author:
Image of Mr. Bill MillerQ: What inspired you to start writing and publishing?

A: I have been an avid equestrian all of my adult life and have been actively involved in Foxhunting for most of that time. We are a drag hunt which means we don’t actually chase live animals and there is never a kill. A number of years ago, the Master of the Hunt, an elderly lady, told me the brief story about a hound that went missing for three months and was found safe and sound several states away. This was the inspiration for Heroes and Hounds and as an 80th birthday present for my dear friend, I wrote the story. It was delivered as a manuscript in a three-ring binder. I shopped the story around for a little while but I was disappointed at the results so I filed it away. (Rejection letters) A few years later, I met another author who was writing novels about foxhunting in Mississippi. We talked and she told me about self-publishing which by now had reached respectable levels. I sent her the manuscript, she read it and loved it, and encouraged me to publish. Next I looked for an illustrator which I felt would great enhance the project. I met a retired couple from upstate New York. She an illustrator, he a book designer. I had gotten all kinds of ridiculous quotes from others around the country but Mary and Al read the story, loved it, and wanted to be part of the project. And they didn’t want any upfront money. It took another year to bring the illustrations to life, to really rewrite and edit the manuscript and publish the book. But it was a labor of love from everyone involved and the results have been more than we ever imagined. The story itself, while based on a true incident, really took on a life of its own and is basically fiction.

My publishing experience has been a great eye-opener. I have worked in and around the publishing world as a filmmaker for 40 years. My start was with Houghton Mifflin and I still make educational films for them. Self-publishing has become very respectable and after being turned down by the brick and mortar companies I decided to go that route. Even a few years ago, vanity publishing, as it is called, would cost a newby author several thousand dollars and you would end up with a garage full of unsold books. Today, you can publish on demand, printing only one book at a time. I did a lot of research and narrowed the field down to two publishers, Createspace and LuLu. Research on the internet left them running neck and neck so it came down to personal response from the two. Basically, Lulu never would call me back and getting them to answer questions was very difficult. On the other hand, Createspace was always available by telephone and as the publishing date drew near I was constantly on the phone with them for one reason or another. I have been extremely pleased with Createspace, their product is very good and I have printed close to 700 books. We are running in the black as far as costs are concerned and I have actually shared a small profit with the artist and designer. (We are not quitting our day jobs.)

I started as a writer in television news and perhaps my greatest gift is my ability to type very quickly. Sometimes my fingers get ahead of my thoughts. As a filmmaker, I have had access to many different scenarios in life and have drawn upon them, whether it’s a cattle ranch in Texas of a major league baseball stadium in New Jersey, they have all empowered my life experiences. I am also a very visual person which lends itself to writing extremely vivid scenes that enhance Heroes and Hounds. Everyone who reads it remarks on the colorful settings portrayed in the book. Filmmaking has also given me a great opportunity to enhance my skills as a story teller. Half of the book is written from the perspective of the animals such as Hampton the Hound. This experience comes from being around four-legged creatures my whole life; carrying for them and having them care for me. It is a mutual understanding and the ability to communicate non-verbally that plays a major role in the experience of the book.

Q: Can you tell us more about the characters in your book?

A: All of the animals, both four-legged and two-legged, are imaginary but based on friends I have know or met over the years. I have been riding horses for over 50 years and have horses, dogs, cats and various other animals have shared their lives with me. I have been an honorary whipper-in with Norfolk Hunt Club for the last twenty years and in doing that job have gotten to know many of the hounds up-close and personal. So Hampton, the lead dog in the story, is an amalgam of many of the hounds I have known over the years. His personality really comes from a dog I got from the pound when I graduated from college a million years ago. He was a great dog, part Beagle, part unknown with a wonderful personality and great quirkiness. His portrait still adorns my living room wall. Much of his personality is reflected in Hampton’s inner thoughts. My little dog would do wonderful and unexpected things, had a vocabulary of over 100 words, and I had many people convinced the brown spot on his white back moved up and down according the temperature of the day. I remember one day I was up on my brother-in-laws roof helping fix the TV antennae. (anyone remember those). I looked around and there was my dog up on the roof with us He had climbed the rung ladder two stories to join. I almost expected to see a tool belt strapped to his waist. Another time his foot was nicked by a car and he ran three blocks to the ocean to soak his foot. I think that’s where I got the background for Hampton soaking his foot in mud. Another time we were driving off with two other dogs in the car. He jumped on the hood and starred us down. He wouldn’t be left behind. So yes, the animals in the book are based on real life.

Q: What's next for you?

A: I am currently working on a movie for the web called Cowboy Spirit which will be an original script. We plan on shooting it next summer. You can learn more about it at www.cowboyspirit.tv.

Q: Can you tell us what it's like to be a writer?
A: Writing is a job, just like going to the office nine to five. In order to be successful, and by that I mean finishing your project not necessarily writing a bestseller, you must be disciplined. You need to work at your writing job every day. It can be fifteen minutes of eight hours, but be consistent. Have a plan, a goal that you set for yourself and keep a log where you can chart your progress. Your goal can be 500 words a day, 3,000 words a day or what ever you set for yourself. And it’s okay if you miss a day or two, but if you find yourself not sitting down to write for a week or two, then you must reassess your commitment to writing or finishing your project.

I like to write early in the morning or late at night, when the phone isn’t ringing or the chores around the farm aren’t calling me to interrupt my writing. I also like to write for a solid, uninterrupted period of time, usually about two hours at a time. After that, my brain goes numb and I have to refill it. This is easily accomplished by mucking stalls or taking the dog for a walk. I write very quickly and my first draft is usually horrible. I don’t worry about grammar, spelling or sentence structure. I just type as fast as my ideas and story development come to me. Then I let it sit for a day or two, or even a month, and revisit my writing to clean it up, rewrite and assess where the story is going.

There are times where I, like every other writer, has writers block. Not much you can do about that so learn that from time to time you will be mired in a blank brain. That’s the time to take a long ride on your horse, motorcycle or anything else that will take you away from the stalemate with the computer.

But keep at it. If you have a story to tell, it’s going to come out. And remember, there are great editors out there who will keep you honest in your writing. Don’t be afraid to use them.
