Goodnight Robert, Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Stars, Air & Noises Everywhere

After hearing about Robert, I broke down in tears, fits and sobs really, the kind reserved for family because Robert Stanek was like a father to some of us in the writing community, a favorite uncle, Uncle Robert, to others, and a valued mentor to a great, great many. So many writers, hundreds really, owe their start in writing and careers to this guy, and the same is true of thousands who work in Big Tech, on web-based platforms or in web-based businesses. This guy taught them all how to set up those very businesses. This guy who was larger than life. This guy who was so down to earth. This guy who was so humble. This guy who so loved life. This guy who so loved family. This guy who took care of everyone else. This guy who gave and gave and gave over so many decades to so many and never asked for anything in return.

Robert Stanek was always creating resources to help writers. Writer’s Galley, Internet Job Center, Internet Daily News, others, his earliest efforts in the mid ‘90s. Go Indie, Read Indies, Free Today, and others in the mid ‘00s. He taught us all how to use social media, to create blogs, to use Facebook, to use Twitter and beyond. He created and curated memes like #amwriting, #amblogging, #epicfantasy, #kidslit and #teenlit. He led by example.

By 2000, his professionally published books numbered over 100. Those books, published and distributed by the biggest names in publishing—IDG, Simon & Schuster, Random House, Macmillan, Pearson, Microsoft, McGraw Hill, Time Warner—blazed trails. At a time when few understood the world wide web and its technologies, Robert was not only one of the few recognized world leaders in the web and its technologies, he was the recognized world leader in explaining how those technologies worked clearly and concisely.

Robert was a King maker, unmade by the very things he helped establish. He put upstart Amazon on the map by writing about the company to his audience of millions from its earliest days. He transformed Microsoft Press from a publishing company its readers swore published books in a foreign language called Microsoftese into one praised for publishing books in plain language—that plain language approach Robert himself created and that praise itself was for Robert’s books. His words and style were so beloved they eventually became the plain language style of Microsoft itself.

Credit where credit is due one might imagine, but instead as Robert revealed through his varied writings and blogs, he got no credit for any of it. At the end of the day, his work taught tens of millions, enriched the pockets of his publishers, agents and managers, but left Robert and his family with 3 cents on the dollar. Robert’s work was used in $1B-$2B (yes, B-I-L-L-I-O-N $) worth of training courses and other Microsoft and non-Microsoft work for which he never received a single cent. Not one. None. Zero.

In 2000, Robert Stanek founded the modern indie author movement with his breakout self-published books that transformed publishing and the way we publish today. In 2001, Robert became the first indie author to serialize an e-book at Amazon and has since gone on to write more than 150 indie books. In 2002, his Keeper Martin's Tale and Kingdoms & the Elves books were the first indie e-authored books to top Amazon's bestseller lists. In 2005, the same books were the first indie e-audiobooks to top Audible bestseller lists where they dominated for the next three years (#1 fiction for 14 weeks 2005, 167 weeks Top 10 YA 2005-2008). His Kingdoms & the Elves became one of the top grossing e-audiobooks of all time and was featured on the Audible Home Page throughout the Summer of 2005.

We all know what happens to those who are so far ahead of their time that they seem to exist in a world of their own making. Robert had climbed too many mountains, and those standing at the bottoms of those mountains desperately wanted what he had, and so they did whatever it took to take what Robert had created and claim it as their own or destroy it. Read Robert’s heartbreaking posts about the things that happened to him and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. We as a society love to tear down our heroes. We tear them down with lies, with fake news. We puff ourselves up and make ourselves look big, to make those who are larger than life look small.

Sad but true, strange but true, one of Robert Stanek’s favorite sayings was dare to dream and he dared all of us to dream. Not only to dream with him as he conquered the bestseller lists, which he did time after time until he had so many number ones it seemed a thing unreachable in the sky, but to dream our own dream, forge our own paths and to make of our writing and lives whatever beautiful dream we could dream. Robert told me many times that the empty page was friend, not foe, that he never knew a day of writer’s block. He saw the empty page as a challenge, one that he was not afraid to answer, and answer it he did. In his lifetime, over 20 million of his words were published in over 250 books. I know from speaking with Robert that he has half as many words unpublished, words that we all should hope are someday published. Robert had much to say to the world, and his books indeed say much.
Robert challenged us as writers to see the blank page as a friend as well. He dreamed that his books would be his legacy, his way to ensure his family was financially secure. My silence when Robert needed me the most is something I will never forgive myself for. It was shameful. It was disgraceful. It was dishonorable. I hope that Robert can forgive me, forgive all of us, for not doing what we should have when it would have mattered most. I’m sorry, Robert. Please, please forgive me.

To those reading my words, if you want to do one decent thing today, one decent thing this week, read Robert Stanek’s books and tell the world about them. It’s never too late to right a great wrong.

As a result, he lies to the mercurial leader of his gang, claiming he completed his assignment. After “doing work” for his gang, Darnell receives permission to head back to school and the security of small-town life.

Summer of Indie Finds "Something New" With Sharon Cooper

Today Summer invited contemporary romance author Sharon C. Cooper to talk with us about her debut novel: Something New. Described as an edgy and sweet romance story, Something New tells the tale of two old friends who reunite by chance after the end of two bitter romances.

Something New

Something NewEntrepreneur, Simone Edwards, did what any intelligent woman with a ticking biological clock would do: she asked her longtime boyfriend to marry her. Devastated when he turns her down, and fed up with dead-end relationships, Simone swears off men … and takes a vow of celibacy. How hard could it be? She soon learns it’s harder than she thinks when the most irresistible man in the world, Tim Hollister, shows up at her job. She hasn’t seen him in over ten years, and quickly realizes he is a temptation she doesn’t want to resist. But isn’t there some rule about dating your friend? Simone must decide if a romance with Tim is worth risking their friendship, and her reclaimed virginity.

Betrayed by his supermodel ex-girlfriend, who happens to be the mother of his child, Tim Hollister has placed a padlock on his heart. But when Simone, an old high school friend falls back into his life, he soon forgets his promise to stay clear of beautiful women. Simone was always like a sister to him, but he discovers that his feelings for her aren’t very brotherly. He’s captivated by the woman she’s become and wants to take their friendship to the next level - despite her resistance. Tim can’t avoid their new-found passion, and sets out to prove he’s the man for her.

Summer of Indie held a short interview with author Sharon Cooper to find out more about her experiences as a new author:

Q: Why did you Go Indie?

A: I decided to go indie after several of my critique partners (and friends) started publishing their own books and were successful at it. One day, after receiving yet another rejection – I decided to create my own 3-book deal! This was a few months ago and I currently have two books published (one full length novel and one short story). It’s not going to stop there because my next book, Blue Roses, will be out this summer and another book, Rendezvous with Danger, scheduled for release in the fall of 2012!

Q: What's the best advice you have for aspiring writers, particularly those who are thinking about Going Indie?

A: Write daily – even if you don’t feel like it. Just get your story on paper. Then once it’s on paper, I’d recommend that they get their book professionally edited before deciding to publish it.

Q: What has been your biggest mistake as an author?

A: I think my biggest mistake as an author was not becoming an indie author sooner! The time I spent creating a synopsis and sending out query letters could’ve been learning more about self-publishing and getting my stories out there.

Q: What are some other books that you have published?
A:
Something New (A Sweet Romance - April 2012)
Best Woman for the Job (Short Story - Contemporary Romance - April 2012)
Blue Roses (Romantic Suspense - July 2012)
Rendezvous with Danger (Romantic Suspense – Fall 2012)

Fathoms of Forgiveness

Fathoms of Forgiveness (Sacred Breath, #2)There is no divorce in the undersea kingdom of Adlivun. Marriage is a bond that lasts until death--even if death comes in several centuries, and in that time your spouse happens to become your sworn enemy. This is the conflict that General Visola Ramaris faces when she learns that the mighty Vachlan is behind the attacks on her kingdom. She has sworn to protect Adlivun with her life, but long ago, she also swore to love and honor her husband...
Visola must choose whether she will destroy Vachlan once and for all, or attempt the hardest thing conceivable: communication. After two hundred years of desertion, she has no faith in their feeble bond and knows she can never forgive him. When he threatens the person dearest to her, she must take action. Confronting Vachlan on enemy territory would be nothing short of suicide. She knows that if she falls into his custody, the deranged man would relish breaking her down and making her lose her own sanity.
Princess Aazuria forbids Visola from taking matters into her own hands. She will do anything it takes to protect her friend from the man who wants to crush her. Alas, Visola is a crazy, uncontrollable warrior woman with the blood of Vikings in her veins. Why would she ever consider doing the safe and predictable thing?

Summer of Indie Meets Tracy James Jones

Summer of Indie's featured author for today is former actor and journalism major Tracy James Jones. Jones is a freelance writer and novelist, and is " presently a realistic human-interest writer because I love exploring the dramatic conditions of being human. Flaws and all." Summer of Indie interviewed Jones about two books: Secrets & Lies,  "A contemporary multicultural romance with a twist", and Torn: Sixty Days of Calaboose the story of " a sensitive effeminate male unexpectedly incarcerated in a room full of straight unpredictable men"

Secrets & Lies is an in-depth emotional journey into the private lives of four central characters that unfolds as a provocative multi-cultural modern romance with a twist.

Secrets, as they are, rarely devastate the national population as a whole. They are more often limited to the individual going on about their lives. That is what this story is about, a group of not-so-ordinary people, all from very different backgrounds, whose secrets and lies leaves a trail of honest deception waiting to upset the rituals of their daily existence.

Kennedy Jordan is a handsome young man with a secret past and a challenging future that keeps him in the balance between having what he wants versus what others expect of him.

Camilla Vargas is a beautiful ambitious young woman with big dreams of success that she has planned to obtain by any means possible, and vows to not let anything keep her from it.

Ulanda Jefferson is a hip outspoken fashionista with a fiery attitude. Armored with sharp-wit and an uncensored tongue, she is more than just a force to be reckoned with.

Bren Searcy is a grown-up lost in transition, (literally from male to female). There is almost nothing she wouldn’t bear to hang onto the happiness she has finally found.

In the end, for everyone involved, even the elements of true confessions gets lost in translation as the explicit details of who they are brings the group together in a surprising, yet necessary finale that could change the course of their lives forever…

For those who have already read Secrets & Lies, author Tracy James Jones has also published a sequel: Secrets & Lies 2 - A Family Matter.

The story is also being marketed for film.

The novel Torn: Sixty Days of Calaboose is a fictional memoir, and a contemporary psychological drama.

“It is said that a mind is a terrible thing to waste…
For some, it is also a very terrifying thing to lose…”

What could possibly go wrong for a sensitive effeminate male unexpectedly incarcerated in a room full of unpredictable strangers? For Adrian Bailey, it was just about everything, and in the midst of fear, lies, prejudice, and madness, he finds more…

Under false pretenses, Adrian Bailey finds himself arrested and locked up in the local county jail for the first time in his life. Despite all the horror stories he had read or heard of concerning life behind bars, nothing was like the actual experience. Not only was he utterly devastated and confused over the situation he was unjustly thrown into, but also lost at the mercy of whatever actions that could or would be made against him, including prejudice from someone of his own race. As the madness of his experiences take control, Adrian fears his only recourse is to succumb to whatever means necessary to survive.
The traumatic events that occur thereafter would surpass everything Adrian thought he ever knew about real life. And then he finds what he never expected: an intense three-way interracial love affair that would test every remaining fiber of his mental stability and then some. Worst of all, there wasn’t one thing he could do to stop it. Not one damn thing at all…

Summer of Indie Hangs Out With Lisa Vaughn

The next author in our Summer of Indie lineup is author and free-lance artist Lisa Vaughn. We had the pleasure of interviewing Lisa Vaughn, and found out a lot about her and the piece she wished to share with Summer of Indie readers: her memoir The Gifted Ones, which she described as, "A true story of resilience that sends a strong message of acceptance and the power of love - told in a raw, honest, format, much like talking to an old friend."

After hearing this intruiging premise, we asked author Lisa Vaughn for a more detailed synopsis of what readers could expect from her memoir:

Have you ever been so in love that your daily breath depended upon another?
Have you ever been pushed to unfathomable limits to defend your beliefs?
Have you ever been made to feel like the underbelly of society?
Have you ever been thirteen?
Well I have...and this is my story.
Lisa was conservatively raised in a Catholic family in no-where middle America, where excitement is scarce and dreams are for sleeping. Little did she know, at age thirteen, she would suddenly find herself on a totally different path.

Through an unlikely chance meeting of a fellow classmate, she's surprisingly mesmerized, almost consumed, to befriend a girl who is obviously from the other side of the tracks...the cool side. Lisa does whatever she has to just to be accepted into this small club of coolness. Little did she realize, she was signing up for a lot more than social status. The two best friends find themselves innocently taking their relationship to a foreign level neither had experienced or saw coming.

A rollercoaster ride littered with choices and challenges Lisa never fathomed facing, especially in no-where middle America. She will find out what she is made of as she faces the consequences and struggles that come along with going against the grain.

Throughout their six year relationship, you will witness a touching story of human nature at it's best...and at it's worst. Showing just how far the human spirit can be challenged and pushed to a point where your “fight or flight” instincts naturally kick in. Struggling just to survive in a world where you are not like everyone else, but at the same time you really are. The daily struggles- both internal and external- are exhausting, yet necessary in their quest for one simple human need....love.

Finally breaking through all constraints that hold them back, reaching levels of one-ness that few actually obtain in a lifetime with their partner...only to find once they've reached that special place, it's not quite the right fit...for one of them, at least.

This contemporary story will lead the reader through highs and lows, giving insight to the every day challenges of the socially unaccepted, which will no doubt leave them rooting for the underdog. A true story of human resilience and the power of love...plain and simple.

After finding out more about her book, we asked Lisa Vaughn a few follow up questions about herself and her work:

Q: Can you tell us more about your book?
A: 'The Gifted Ones' is really a love story at it's core...with a taboo twist. Set back in the seventies when the world was even more closed-minded than it is today, it's an honest story of what it truly means to love someone, and how sometimes you can find that love in the most unexpected places. But it's also a story of what it's like not being accepted by the masses. When not everyone is as accepting as you are of your newfound love, and the struggles that come with going against the grain of the majority, forcing you to find out just how far you'll go, when pushed, to defend your beliefs.

Q: You mentioned that you are a free-lance artist, could you tell us more about what motivated you to start writing?

A: My memoir actually started out as a healing tool, helping me deal with my mother's death in 2005. I was surprised to find I had a lot of unfinished business with her, plus a few other people in my life. So what started out as a way to vent pent up anger that I had held inside for thirty plus years, eventually turned into an eye-opening journey for not only me, but for everyone to absorb and learn from.

Q: In your book, who is your favorite character?

A: Well since my book is non-fiction, I'd have to say my fave "character" has to be the person that influenced the six year journey of which I write about in the first place, and that would be my first love, Selina.

Q: Who are some of your favorite authors?

A: I'm an 'indie' girl at heart, always have been, always will be! In movies and books alike. So of course my fave authors are the unknowns, but soon-to-be-up-and-comers! I've read so many fantastic reads in the never-ending world of indies, just too many to count or list! (for fear of leaving someone out, mainly)

Q: Do you have any advice for new writers?

A: Write what you know, and write from your soul. Be real, honest, and raw - even if it's ugly or painful. The readers will sense your honesty and fall into your words with you.

Q: What's next for you (in your writing)?

A: I'm actually working on a second memoir, entitled 'Beautiful Freak', hopefully to be pubbed later this year - aiming for summertime.

Q: Can you tell us three interesting facts you'd like your readers to know?
A:
1. I'm actually an artist, and I view my memoir, The Gifted Ones, as just another art project in a different medium.
2. I'm a self-proclaimed 'hippie-chick' that digs color, the beach, and expressing myself through my art. I love projects that make people think, opening their minds as a result.
3. I dig cats, am a Leo, and hope to come back as a big, fat, lazy feline next time.

Lisa currently resides in Florida along with her loving husband and four cats, where she continues to create her visions of self-expression.
